How do I know when the best time to remove the pups from the mother plant? After the bloom is finished, during, or at some other point? To cut away the pups a serrated knife should be used to make the cut at the point where pup meets the mother? Is that correct?

You’ve got it. Just remove the shoot with a knife or some pruners about an inch or more from the pup and the mother bromeliad. These pups should remain on the parent plant until they reach approximately 1/2 to 3/4 the size of the parent plant.
